Plenty of Goals In the Southern League

Thirty-three goals were scored in the third round of the Southern League, with the game of the Round Coastal Spirit and Cashmere Technical lived up to its billing, with two sides playing out a thrilling 4 – 4 result, played before a large crowd. Dunedin City Royals and Ferrymead Bays also shared the points when finishing 4-all result. Christchurch United had to play the second half a player down, edged Universities of Canterbury 4 – 3, the final two games ending in 5 – 0 scorelines with Nelson Suburbs too strong for Selwyn, with Nomads coming out on top of FC Twenty 11.

United have moved to the top of the table for the first time this season with 9 points with Technical and Suburbs on 7. Nomads are now in fourth place on 6, with Coastal on 5. The bottom half of the table sees Bays on 4, Selwyn on 3, and Royals 1 with both UC and FC yet to secure a point.

For the second round in a row, Coastal Spirt gave up a late goal which cost them a draw. Lyle Matthysen put Cashmere Technical ahead for Coastal struck back three times in eleven minutes before the break. Joe Hoole drew Coastal level before Technical were on the ropes when Mason Stearn and Mohamad Taqizada scored quickly before Garbhan Coughlan scored in added time to bring Technical back into the game. Liam Cotter then restored Coastal’s two-goal margin just after the break. Technical then hit back immediately when Adian Barbour-Ryan scored. From a free-kick, Tom Schwarz headed just inside the post to lock the scoreboard up with both teams then having chances to break the deadlock in seven minutes of added time.

In the other 4 – 4 result Ferrymead Bays took the early lead when Cameron Rean scored before Nic Zambrano levelled. Satsuki Ito and Chris Murphy scored in the space of four minutes for Bays with Raven August adding Dunedin City Royals second before the break. A double from Will Turner put the Dunedin side ahead for the first time in the game with twenty to place before Liam Murray got Bays a share of the points.

Christchurch United looks to be going to the break well in control over UC after a double from Joel Stevens and Thomas Chao, but then went a player down on the stroke of half-time after Sorasit Mac Prathumphithak received a straight red card for serious foul play. UC then pulled two goals back when Pero Forman and Zac Winter scored before Niko Bruce came into the game for United off the bench and scored with 14 to play. Deep in added time, Stu Campbell, a sub for UC closed up the margin to just one goal.

Nelson Suburbs picked up their second win on the road this season when over-running Selwyn United after the break. Trevin Myers scored the only score in the opening half before completing his hat-trick into the second half. Spencer Barber got the scoring underway straight after the break with the final goal going to Kilian Barrau who scored just before normal time was up.

Nomads inflicted FC Twenty 11 third defeat on end with FC yet to score this season. Flynn Holdem bagged a first-half brace with Angus McIntyre and Niraj Basnet also scoring before the break. FC went a player down with 25 to play after Nishan Biswa received his second yellow card with Cooper Goldsmith coming into the game off the bench to add the final Nomads' goals.

In the coming round United host, the Royals with UC facing Suburbs. Technical take on Selwyn with Bays having the home advantage over FC with Nomads set to meet Coastal.

Technical Secure Vital Win In Women’s Qualifying League

Cashmere Technical secured a vital win in the South Island Women’s Qualifying League when defeating defending title holders Coastal Spirit SAS, 3 – 0. Universities of Canterbury (UC) also picked up their second win when defeating Halswell 2 – 0, with Nomads-Waimak (NW) United securing their first points of the league when edging Nelson Suburbs 3 – 2 with Selwyn having the bye. Technical and UC both move to 6 points, Suburbs and NW have 3, with both Coastal and Selwyn, who, have a game in hand, pointless.

Cashmere Technical were worthy of their win against archrivals, Coastal Spirt, with the result the first time in seven seasons that Coastal went down by a 3-goal margin, without scoring in a local league. After an even opening, Margi Dias scored against her old club in the 22nd minute. Technical then doubled their lead when Anna McPhie scored before the break. Both keepers had work to do early in the second half with Coastal then having their best patch. From a Lauren Dabner free-kick, Mel Cameron headed just wide and minutes later Tech keeper, Maddi Iro turned the ball away for a corner. On the hour mark Coastal turned the ball over near their goal line and Lara Wall punished the mistake to complete the scoring.

In what was a tight game between UC and Halswell United, UC went to the break ahead after Petra Buyck scored in the 45th minute. The second half followed a similar pattern with both sides wasting chances before Ella Innes doubled the students' lead when finding the back of the net deep in added time.

Late flights into Nelson meant a delayed kick-off between Nelson Suburbs and NW United with Rebecca Hewitt opening the scoring right on half-time to put NW ahead. Jemma Creed then increased the lead before a double from Emily Lauer saw Suburbs level. Just when it looked like the points would be shared Suburbs conceded an own goal with time almost up.

Round 3 fixtures have NW meeting UC, Selwyn facing Halswell and Coastal hosting Suburbs on Sunday with Technical having the bye.
