Technical Cause Upset In Kate Sheppard Cup
Cashmere Technical caused one of the upsets in the NZ Football Foundation Kate Sheppard Cup when they knocked out Coastal Spirit SAS 1 – 0, to advance into the Quarter Final round. Coastal went into the tie as firm favours to make it 10 appearances in the quarter finals out of last 11 times the cup has been contested and having defeated Technical twice in the New World Women’s Premier League this season.
It was end-to-end action right from the opening whistle with Lauren Dabner having and early shot saved by Tech keeper, Madi Iro. Tech then went close with a Jess Dyer shot that was saved by Una Foyle. Foyle then did well to tip a freekick over the bar late in the opening half. Technical would of been disappointed to go to the break without making more of their greater possession as Coastal had to reshuffle their defenders after Rebecca Lake was a non-starter due to illness.
Coastal came out strongly after the break with Mel Cameron going close on several occasions, as did Sam Whyte and Jayda Stewart. Iro, who had been named in the NZ Under 17 training camp during the week, did well to tip a shot from Stewart over the bar and succeeded in a one-on-one contest with Cameron. At the other end Charlotte Mortlock went close for Tech. Dabner then saw her shot hit the post before Stewart and Cameron combined well only to see Cameron’s shot put over the bar. Technical then finished strongly with a shot somehow going across the face of the goal without being turned in. Emma Kench caused bother when she was subbed on for Tech with around 20 minutess to play and set up Kate Guildford whose shot went straight to Foyle. With three minutes remaining Dyer was brought down in the area with the ref point straight to the spot without any real protest from the Coastal players. Former Football Fern, Kate Loye stepped up and calmly scored from the spot with Tech then having to see of several half chances to claim the win and the MacFarland Cup as the last Canterbury side remaining in the cup.

Plenty of Drama In Chatham Cup
There was plenty of drama in the local ties of the Chatham Cup with extra time required in both, and one needing penalties before the two teams were found to move into the Round of 16 of the historic national competition. Current Cup holders, Cashmere Technical had to work hard before knock-outing Ferrymead Bays 2 – 1. The winning goal came from the penalty spot in the first period of extra time. Nelson Suburbs advanced into the next round 5 – 4 on penalties over Coastal Spirit after the two sides were locked together a 1 – 1 at end of full time and extra time.
Technical got off to a flyer when taking the lead in the 6th minute after a ball from Lachie McIsaac lead to a mix up in the Bays defence which allowed Lyle Matthysen to nip in on the loose ball and bend a shot into the open net. Bays then went close with Will Pierce and Ryan Stanley combining well but Cory Vickers just managing to clear the ball away from a goal bound shot. Chances went begging at both ends before the half time whistle sounded. Chris Murphy then shot wide just after the break with Tech sub, Declan Tyndall pushing a shot across the face of the goal. Bays were finally rewarded on the hour with the pace of Will Pierce seeing him go clear on goal and untroubled to put the ball pass Danny Knight in goal. Both team wasted chances to seal the game before normal time was called. Bays had the better of the opening minutes in extra time with a shot from Pierce hitting the base of the post. The game turned late in the first period of extra time when Matthysen was clipped down right on the goal line with Tom Schwarz scoring from the resulting penalty. Bays put real pressure on the Technical goal in the final 15 minutes with Pierce again going close. Bays keeper, Coey Turipa, went up field for several corners as the time was almost up. Technical had to survive one last scare in the final seconds as a shot the hard-working Pierce just flashed wide of the post. The win sees Tech retain the MacFarlane Cup as the last Canterbury club in the Cup.
All the goals came in the opening half between Suburbs and Coastal with Aiden Higgs putting the home side ahead in the 27th minute. The game then had a brief stoppage after referee, James Berry had to be replaced, by one of his assistants, after injuring his hamstring. Corey Larsen then went close to extend the led but the shot cannoned back into play off the post. With the first half almost up, Coastal won a freekick near the Suburbs goal which resulted with Mark Zimmerman managing to get a faint touch of the ball to direct past keeper Cory Wilson. The remainder of the normal and then extra time was a typical cup tie, not pretty at times with both sides dominating for periods without being able to score which sent the game into a penalty shootout. Coastal went first with both sides scoring from their first three attempts. Coastal’s fourth spot kick was saved by Wilson who was a judged to have moved to early with the retake then skyed over the bar. Coastal keeper, Ellis Hare-Reid almost got a hand to Hamish Cardigan’s spot kick before Coastal successfully fired home their fifth in. Scott Wallace then stepped up to convert the final spot kick to put Suburbs into the next round.
In Dunedin, Green Island were untroubled to come from behind from a penalty by Northern’s Tyler Muir in the opening minutes. Northern then concede an own goal before Cam Anderson scored in added time to give Green Island the lead at the break. Caleb Mason extended the lead minutes into the second half with further goals to Matt Henry and Harrison McLean in the space of three minutes safely seeing Green Island into the next round.
Mosgiel also scored early in their tie with Dunedin City Royals before Morgan Day found the back of the net in the ninth minute. Mosgiel then battled hard against their Southern League rivals with and upset looking to be on the cards before the Royals finally levelled when Kaleb de Groot-Green scored from a freekick. With extra time looking on the cards, En Watanabe found the back of the net in the fourth minutes of added time to give the Royals the win.
The four winners will now go into the hat for the draw for next round which with be played over the weekend of the 9/10 July looking to win to advance into the Quarter Final’s which will be a ‘fully open’ national draw.
